We visited Double Peak Park in San Marcos this weekend. Even though we have driven through the pass countless times, it was our first time visiting the park at the top. There were great views of North Country and the surrounding hills in all directions as we hiked the 2 mile trail around the 1,646 foot summit.
It was a good thing we took the advice to travel counter-clockwise around the hill since the longest, steepest section of rough trail is an uphill. It is easier to climb than to descend the rocky bike trail at the end. To the east, we watched the sunset paint Mount Whitney (1,729 ft.) and Franks’s Peak (1,680 ft.) on the other side of the pass.
Finishing our hike back at the summit, we arrived just in time to watch the sunset over the ocean. Quite a crowd had formed to watch. Batiquitos Lagoon at the border of Encinitas and Carlsbad was visible directly west along the coastline.
